Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing, Η Ιστορία Του.

  To "Sultans Of Swing" είναι ένα τραγούδι των Dire Straits, όπου βρίσκεται στον δίσκο τους που έχει το όνομα τους και κυκλοφόρησε 19 Μαΐου του 1978. το τραγούδι γράφτηκε από τον Mark Nopfler.

Η έμπνευση για την ονομασία του τραγουδιού, ήταν όταν ένα βράδυ ο Mark Nopfler είχε πάει σε 

ένα μπαρ στο Deptford, στο Νότιο Λονδίνο. Εκεί έπαιζε ένα συγκρότημα jazz μουσική, όπου όμως ήταν σχεδόν άδειο από κόσμο. Όταν λοιπόν τελείωσε το πρόγραμμα του το συγκρότημα, ο τραγουδιστής τους είπε στους λιγοστούς θαμώνες του μαγαζιού, "Goodnight and thank you... We are the Sultans Of Swing" ("Καληνύχτα και σας ευχαριστούμε... Είμαστε οι σουλτάνοι του σουΐνγκ"). Τότε η ονομασία του συγκροτήματος σε συνδυασμό με το τρόο ντυσίματος του συγκροτήματος, φάνηκε διασκεδαστική στο μυαλό του Mark Nopfler. Έτσι όλο αυτό το περιστατικό ήταν η αφορμή για να έρθει η έμπνευση στον Mark Nopfler και να γράψει το τραγούδι.

  Κατόπιν όταν σχηματίστηκαν οι Dire Straits, έκαναν ένα Demo από 5 τραγούδια και το πήγανε στον DJ Charlie Gillett, ο οποίος τότε είχε μια ραδιοφωνική εκπομπή που ονομάζονταν Honky Tonk στο BBC Radio London. Ο σκοπός των Dire Straits, ήταν απλώς να πάρει συμβουλές από τον Charlie Gillett. Όμως το "Sultans Of Swing" του άρεσε πολύ με αποτέλεσμα να το βάλει αμέσως στο rotation του. Αποτέλεσμα αυτού ήταν, ότι δύο μήνες αργότερα, οι Dire Straits υπέγραψαν δισκογραφικό συμβόλαιο με την Phonogram Records.

  Έφτασε στην θέση #8 στο UK Singles Chart και #4 στο US Billboard Hot 100.

  Το σόλο του τραγουδιού έφτασε #22 στη λίστα του Guitar World‍ σαν το καλύτερο σόλο και #32 

 στο Rolling Stone στην λίστα των guitar songs.

The don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band

It ain't what they call rock and roll

And the Sultans played Creole

And then the man he steps right up to the microphone

And says at last just as the time bell rings

'Thank you goodnight now it's time to go home'

And he makes it fast with one more thing

'We are the Sultans of Swing'
